I work in an environment full of dudes who are...how do I put this? Seen the movie "Master and Commander Oh My God This Movie Title Is Far Too Long"? We're like the crew. Filthy, profane, hard-working, lazy, heavy-drinking, low-class, you name it. Few women. Almost everyone gets rotated into a position of authority at some point, including most of the women because we tend to compensate for strength with skill and smarts, and inevitably that leads to keyrings and clipboards.

I've noticed that a man in charge can be in a bad mood, shouting and grumbling and whatnot, and be cut slack for having a bad day or just being a guy who is rough around the edges, but a woman exhibiting identical behavior is automatically "a bitch." Also, while men are not expected to be smiley and outgoing, women are, and not behaving like a flight attendant will raise eyebrows.

The only thing I've found to be helpful is lowering my vocal pitch as much as possible while still trying to sound like myself.

My dad once asked me with honest puzzlement whether I encountered sexism on a daily basis. It was difficult to even begin to answer him, when clearly the way in which our entire Western culture has been constructed to give him the privilege of not thinking about it was simply invisible. I could only come up with the inadequate response that it's like always being a foreigner.
